Let’s introduce you to silane coupling agents (Jiangxi New Materials Co., Ltd.)
Silane coupling agent is a type of organosilicon compound that contains two groups with different chemical properties in the molecule. Its classic product can be represented by the general formula YSiX3. In the formula, Y is a non-hydrolyzable group and X is a hydrolyzable group. Due to this special structure, silane coupling agents work at the interface of inorganic materials (such as glass, metals or minerals) and organic materials (such as organic polymers, coatings or adhesives), combining or coupling two completely different Material. It can enhance the affinity between organic matter and inorganic compounds, and can strengthen and improve the physical and chemical properties of composite materials, such as strength, toughness, electrical properties, water resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Why use silane coupling agents?

When using glass fibers or minerals to reinforce organic polymers, the interface or interfacial phase between the polymer and the inorganic material involves a complex cross-talk between many physical and chemical factors. These factors relate to adhesion, physical strength, expansion coefficient, concentration gradient and retention of product properties. An important disruptive force affecting adhesion is the migration of moisture to the inorganically reinforced hydrophilic surface. Moisture attacks the interface, destroying the bond.
“Real” coupling agents can form water-resistant bonds at the interface of inorganic and organic materials. Silane coupling agents have unique chemical and physical properties that not only enhance bonding strength, but more importantly, prevent bond disintegration at the interface during aging and use of composite materials. Coupling agents impart a stable bond between two dissimilar, difficult-to-bond surfaces.
In composite materials, selecting the appropriate silane can increase the flexural strength of the composite material by more than 40%. Silane coupling agents also enhance the bond strength between coating and adhesive while increasing resistance to humidity and other harsh environmental conditions.
Other advantages that silane coupling agents can provide include:
1. Better wetting of inorganic materials
2. Lower viscosity when compounded
3. Smoother composite surface
4. Reduce the inhibitory effect of inorganic materials on thermosetting composite catalysts
5. Clearer and more transparent reinforced plastic

Which industries use silane coupling agents?

Coatings, inks

Coatings using silane coupling agents have the following advantages:
1. Corrosion resistance
2. Improve adhesion
3. Improve rheology
4. Improve the dispersion of dyes and fillers
5. Anti-UV
6. Waterproof and chemical resistant
Synthetic elastomers and resinous coatings often experience adhesion problems on hydrophilic silicate and metallic surfaces, especially when exposed to high temperatures, water, or salt. The protective effect is achieved by adhesion promoters on the surface of the substrate. Whether used as a coating additive or primer, silane coupling agents can improve coating performance.
