Unstable to hydrogen sulfide. Heated to 200°C, it decomposes black copper oxide, water (small water droplets formed by condensation when exposed to cold) and carbon dioxide. Unstable in hydrogen sulfide gas. Solubility in water is 0.0008%. Copper carbonate is dusty, so contact with skin, eyes, etc. and inhalation should be avoided.

Insoluble in water, soluble in ammonia water to form copper ammonia complex ions. Decomposes when heated to 220°C. Basic copper carbonate with a composition of 2:1 is sky blue powdery crystal. If left in the air for a long time, it will absorb moisture and release part of carbon dioxide, and slowly turn into 1:1 basic copper carbonate, which is insoluble in water, but soluble in ammonia to form copper ammonia complex ions.

Used as analytical reagents and pesticides

Basic copper carbonate is used in organic catalysts, pyrotechnics manufacturing and pigments. In agriculture, it is used as a preventive agent for plant smut, a pesticide, an antidote for phosphorus poisoning, and a fungicide for seeds; mixed with asphalt to prevent livestock and wild rats from chewing saplings; used as a copper additive in feed , used as dealkalizing agent and raw material for producing copper compounds during crude oil storage. It can also be used for electroplating, anti-corrosion and analytical reagents.

Specific method:

According to the volume ratio V (CuSO4): V (Na2CO3) = 1:1.2, take 0.5mol/L sodium carbonate solution and 0.5mol/L copper sulfate solution, and place them in a water bath at 70°C until the temperature is constant. Then mix the two and stir in a water bath environment of 70°C. A light blue precipitate can be observed. Adjust the pH value to 8.50~8.88, and stir the suspension continuously until the precipitate turns green. Stop stirring at this time and let it stand. After the precipitate settles, filter it and wash the precipitate with deionized water until there is no sulfate ion (sodium sulfate). The precipitate is then dried in an oven at 100°C to obtain green basic copper carbonate.
