Zhang Feng has now broken Qian Xuesen’s record and became the youngest Chinese tenured professor in the history of MIT. It is understood that Zhang Feng was born in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province on October 22, 1982. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1994 and became interested in life science research when he was in high school. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and physics from Harvard University in 2004 and a Ph.D. in chemical and biological engineering from Stanford University in 2009.
Zhang Feng’s main research field is nervous system function and disease. He has made cutting-edge exploration in the development of gene editing tools using natural microbial CRISPR systems for eukaryotic cells, including human cells. Through CRISPR and other methods, Zhang Feng conducts in-depth research on how genes and genetic mechanisms are related to various diseases, especially neurological disorders.
Zhang Feng joined MIT in 2011 while working on brain and cognition at the McGovern Institute. Science Department, and the Broad Institute for scientific research. In 2013, his laboratory developed the innovative CRISPR/Cas system, which greatly improved the reliability and efficiency of gene editing and attracted international attention. He has received numerous honors for his groundbreaking research results.
In 2014, Zhang Feng was selected as one of the top ten scientific figures in 2013 by Nature magazine. In 2015, he won the Nominated for “Bostonian of the Year”, he won the Canadian Gairdner International Award in March 2016.
