The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council held the 2016 National Science and Technology Awards Conference at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on January 9.
The results of five awards including the National Highest Science and Technology Award, the National Natural Science Award, the National Technological Invention Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award were announced. Zhao Zhongxian and Tu Youyou jointly won the 2016 National Highest Science and Technology Award.
The National Highest Science and Technology Award mainly rewards major breakthroughs at the forefront of contemporary science and technology, or creates huge economic or social benefits in scientific and technological innovation and transformation of scientific and technological achievements. An outstanding scientist is the highest honor in China’s scientific and technological circles. Since the award was officially established in 2000, 27 scientists have won the award. The average age is over 80 years old. The award amount for the winner is 5 million yuan.
