NEC’s high-efficiency methanol synthesis catalyst technology reaches international advanced level

Recently, China Petroleum (5.320, 0.00, 0.00%) and Chemical Industry Federation organized experts in Beijing to appraise the scientific and technological achievements of “MC17 high-efficiency methanol synthesis catalyst technology” completed by Low Carbon Institute of National Energy Group. The appraisal committee agreed that the MC17 methanol synthesis catalyst developed by NECLI is at the international advanced level in terms of methanol spatial and temporal yield and physical strength, and recommended accelerating the industrial demonstration in larger scale plants and promoting the application in methanol synthesis plants with annual production capacity of one million tons.

“MC17 high-efficiency methanol synthesis catalyst technology” is a new methanol synthesis catalyst technology independently developed by the team of Coal Chemical Research Center of National Energy Group Low Carbon Institute, and after 6 years of unremitting efforts, it has completed the breakthrough of high-efficiency methanol synthesis catalyst technology from 0 to 1. “After 6 years of unremitting efforts, it has accomplished the breakthrough of high efficiency methanol synthesis catalyst technology from 0 to 1. The technology developed a multi-step continuous co-precipitation process for directional control of precursor structure, an original slow de-watering and drying process for control of catalyst precursor catalytic structure, and an innovative dry forming process for enhancing physical strength of catalyst. The fragmentation rate was less than 1% after a comparative test of hanging flakes for 32000 hours in a 400,000 ton/year methanol synthesis plant. In the 120,000 ton/year natural gas to methanol plant, more than 8,000 hours of stable operation were carried out, the average monthly load was significantly increased compared with the previous catalyst, the selectivity of refined methanol was improved, the comprehensive energy consumption was significantly reduced, the plant did not carry out water cooler dewaxing, and all energy consumption and other indicators were the best in history.

The “MC17 High Efficiency Methanol Synthesis Catalyst Technology” passed the technical appraisal of Petrochemical Federation, which marks a more solid step for NEC Low Carbon Institute’s independent intellectual property rights of methanol synthesis catalyst technology to be applied in larger scale industrial plants, and is expected to realize the domestic supply of methanol catalysts and become a competitive technology in the million-tonne large methanol market. It is expected to realize the domestic supply of methanol catalysts and become a very competitive technology in the million-ton large methanol market, which will promote the methanol production industry towards the goal of improving quality, increasing efficiency and reducing carbon.
