SKC’s polyurethane thermal insulation material passed the test of Korean national flame retardant standard for the first time
A flame retardant polyurethane thermal insulation material produced by SK pucore, the polymer material manufacturing department of SKC, has been approved by the Korean National Verification and Verification Agency. This is the first time that polyurethane based insulation products have passed the Korean national flame retardant performance test in the insulation industry.
Polyurethane is basically a highly flammable plastic material. The exterior decoration materials used in many buildings are combustible due to their high thermal insulation performance and appearance. However, due to the plastic external wall insulation board, a large-scale fire broke out in South Korea’s residential buildings and multi-function buildings. In November 2019, the use of this flammable material was prohibited.
Polyurethane insulation materials are usually used in the form of foam, which is sandwiched between the exterior wall panels or sprayed between the wall and the panel during the manufacturing phase. The sprayed polyurethane foam will expand and completely fill the void.
SK pucore’s thermal insulation material can maintain its flame retardancy, which is due to the development of polyols, which is a key chemical used to produce polyurethane foam. The newly developed polyol based materials have high thermal insulation and flame retardancy.
The Ministry of Land, Land and Transport of South Korea divides building materials into three types – flame retardant, flame retardant and flame retardant materials. Fire retardant materials take a long time to catch fire, while fire retardant materials such as concrete, clay tiles and bricks do not catch fire. Flame retardant material is a complex of chemical substances, which is extremely difficult to ignite.
SK pucore said in a statement on December 19 that the polyurethane insulation materials jointly developed by SK pucore, Lotte Engineering Construction Company, Lotte Chemical Company and two building material manufacturers (SY Group and Geun Seung Insulationtech) have passed the flame retardant performance test conducted by the Korean qualified laboratory. The test results have been verified by the state-owned Korean Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS).
