BASF plans second phase expansion of Geismar MDI plant

BASF, a major player in the polyurethane industry, reported that it will invest $87 million in a second phase of MDI expansion at its plant in Geismar, Louisiana.

<span style="font-size: 16px" The company has committed $150 million to MDI's first phase of expansion, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2020.

The second phase of the project will retain 1,238 existing BASF jobs at the Geismar site. The Sima plant is the company’s largest manufacturing site in North America. The project is expected to start in late 2019 and is expected to be completed in 2021. The company estimates the project will support 170 construction jobs.

<span style="font-size: 16px" The expansion project will double MDI production from 300,000 tons/year to about 600,000 tons/year. MDI is used to produce polyurethane, which helps improve the insulation properties of appliances, lightweight materials for automobiles and energy efficiency in buildings.
