Polyurethane used in industrial tires minimizes wear and puncture costs

At concrete and aggregate recycling sites, concrete and asphalt are crushed to produce recycled aggregates, which are reused in the construction industry as roadbed or building foundation base materials. In order to maintain normal operations, on-site managers push large jagged pieces of damaged sidewalks, roads or building materials (which may contain steel bars) to the crushing line with loaders to reduce their size.

Without external protection, the uneven edges and steel bars in the gravel put the loader's construction tires at serious risk of sidewall punctures and wear, especially the front tires, which are closest to numerous sharp, abrasive objects.

Headquartered in Michigan, Argonics specializes in high-performance polyurethane elastomers that are resistant to One of the largest producers of impact, wear-resistant and customizable polyurethane products. The company has developed a new sidewall protection device for OTR tires. The company’s sidewall protectors are designed to stop punctures and wear on loader sidewalls while significantly extending tire life, ensuring reliable operation of aggregate recycling operations. And, it uses a specialized polyurethane formula called Kryptane, which is designed for extreme conditions involving abrasion, sliding or impact.

This solution is designed for heavy equipment on aggregate recycling sites. Operators simply bolt on the polyurethane sidewall guards to prevent sidewall punctures during operation.

In 2011, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta conducted a study on truck engineering tire failure detection and determined Five fault areas of tire failure are identified: tire tread, shoulder, sidewall, bead and inner lining. The study cites research from Canada’s Syncrude Ltd., which examined the causes of OTR tire failures from 2005-2010. Sidewall cuts account for approximately 18% of all failures, sidewall separations account for 10%, and sidewall impacts exceed 5%.

When a loader’s sidewalls are damaged, often caused by punctures, the vehicle cannot be operated safely and replacement of engineering tires is expensive. For example, Caterpillar Model 980 wheel loader construction tires can cost $6,000 or more. Repairing a damaged sidewall requires valuable time spent sending the tire out for repair, and the repair may not be successful. As a result, aggregate recycling operators face forced loader shutdowns, costly tire replacements and reduced production, or even significant operational downtime.

This tough, highly elastic material is excellent at preventing penetration by sharp objects and allowing them to deflect. It changes shape under impact and then returns to its original shape. Polyurethane also offers maximum wear resistance, making it an ideal material for applications where severe wear is a problem.

For these reasons, polyurethane has been used in mining, large-scale engineering and aggregate recycling sites in North America. According to Argonics, the idea to use the special properties of polyurethane for OTR sidewall protection came from Perry Fall, regional manager for Argonics Canadian distributor Love Industries. He felt that Argonics’ expertise in high-performance polyurethane elastomers was well suited to construction machinery applications and came up with a preliminary design.
